X-Ray Options

Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays are the most commonly taken X-rays in a dentist’s or oral surgeon’s office and can detect problems within the mouth that cannot be seen with a standard oral examination from the doctor. Many patients have already undergone a dental X-ray at their dentist’s office before visiting an oral surgeon. Regular checkups involving dental X-rays are the best way for our patients to detect problems in the mouth early to avoid costly and painful procedures down the road. If you have not received a dental X-ray before your initial consultation, we can perform one at our office.

Panoramic X-Rays

A panoramic X-ray provides the doctor with a wraparound photograph of the patient’s face and teeth and exposes structures such as wisdom teeth, bone loss, and fractures that would not otherwise be seen using traditional X-ray technology. They are also a great alternative to oral examinations for patients who have sensitive gag reflexes. Panoramic X-rays are usually only taken when there is a need for an in-depth look at the sinus and nasal areas, the mandibular nerve, and to evaluate TMJ cases.

Cephalometric X-Rays

A cephalometric X-ray provides doctors with a radiographic image of the side of the face and does not involve the placement of any plates or film in the mouth. Much like full panoramic X-rays, they provide an in-depth view of the nasal and sinus passages and the jaw bone and are very helpful in measuring teeth. These X-rays are typically taken in a panoramic X-ray machine with a special cephalometric film and expose the patient to much less radiation than traditional X-ray technology.
